HOME       7.4 Eyebrows - Shaping and Tweezing Brows

Eyebrows: Shaping, tweezing, shaping brows for small and thick bone structures, numbing painful eyebrow tweezing, using a magnifying mirror when tweezing eyebrows, study before shaping brows.

Shaping and tweezing eyebrows
Nicely shaped eyebrows are an automatic face lift. It can be difficult to determine how much eyebrow to tweeze, but following our tips below should help guide you.

lighted magnifying mirror is a must for tweezing all the fine hairs that are almost impossible to see with the naked eye.

Before shaping your eyebrows, feel the natural shape of your eyebrows by running your finger along your brow bone.  Examine your brows closely.  You want to stay with a natural full look, but not thick eyebrows.
  1. Using a white eyeliner pencil, draw an outline of your brows showing how you want them shaped. You will use this as your guide.
  2. Brush the hair of the brows straight up with an eyebrow brush; then use small makeup sissors to trim and shape the top of the brow.
  3. Begin tweezing away the hairs between your eyes.
  4. Remove obvious stray hairs from under the natural brow.
  5. Begin shaping by only tweezing a few hairs at a time, then step back and take a look.  If more hair should be removed, remove only one or two at a time.  Be careful when removing hair - sometimes it never grows back.
  6. Work slowly until you achieve your desired results.  Only you can determine what looks best for your bone structure.

Pulling Direction Matters when Tweezing the Eyebrows
With eyebrow tweezers, tweeze the hair of your brow in the natural direction of its hair growth.
For example:
  • The hair on your right eyebrow that grows toward the direction of your right ear should be pulled in the direction of your right ear.
  • If you tweeze the brows in an un-natural position, movement of the root can occur causing hair to regrow in the wrong direction.

Small and Thick bone Structures
  • For small bone structures, try a thinner brow; for thick bone structures try a thicker brow.
Numb Painful Eyebrow Tweezing
Prior to tweezing:
  • Rub the brow area with ice prior to tweezing to help numb the pain, or;
  • Press a warm facial wash cloth against the brow area for two minutes to open up the pores, or;
  • Tweeze brows immediately after a warm shower. Pores will be open making tweezing easier
After Tweezing:
  • Place a wrapped ice cube on the skin after tweezing.  It reduces the pain, swelling and redness.

Keep the eyebrow area clean
  • Always wash the brow area before and after tweezing.
Use a magnifying mirror when tweezing
  • Use a lighted magnifying mirror when tweezing.  You will find more of those little tiny hairs and your eyebrows will look much nicer.
  • Tweezing eyebrows should never be a rush job.  Always put aside some time to shape and define the brows carefully and correctly.
Study Before Shaping Eyebrows
  • Before shaping and defining your eyebrows, we recommend looking at one of the many available guides on the internet.  Mary Kay puts out a nice guide under their Tips and Trends section.

Or

Thick Brows
  • Brows that are too thick can make you look older and angry.
Brows Arched too High
  • Harshly arched brows can make you look like you are in a state of shock.
