Autumn and Winter Style Guide

Forget Summer beachwear and holiday wardrobes - Autumn and Winter fashions are the collections that bring us back to life! As soon as the Fall collections show in New York, Milan, Paris and London, the fashion editors begin chirruping with glee, the style magazines go crazy and the high street begins to fill with rows of gorgeous, desirable new items for the colder months.

For many, the change of seasons brings about a reacquaintance with last year`s wardrobe. If you`ve created a good capsule foundation, you should have some basic key items in classic shades, quality tailoring and time-tested cuts; items which will have been dry-cleaned, vacuum-packed and stored correctly over the warmer months. All that`s required at this stage is a refresh of the high trend pieces - accessories, a new bag, a pussy bow blouse, a vintage skirt or some silk scarves.

For most of us however, the approach of Autumn largely means re-creating a wardrobe from scratch. This year, make a pact to do as the French do and buy according to `cost per wear`, rather than initial outlay. For example, an expensive pair of impeccably tailored trousers will ultimately work out cheaper per wear, than a fashion-forward, but ultimately disposable piece, that will just last a season. So get the basics in place. Look for pieces such as wool trousers in a classic cut, along with some smart black cigarette pants. Try knee high riding boots in black, charcoal or deep brown - these are ideal for the Winter months and look incredibly stylish. A good coat is a must - there are plenty of styles to choose from, whether it`s double breasted, single, tie, full, short or midi length, classic trench, urban shaped, cape... the list goes on! Well fitting jeans work for all seasons - if you find a pair that suit you, buy several! A great cashmere sweater and cardigan are also ideal for this time of year, along with silk shells, which can be layered with warmer knits.

Bring your look up to date and personalize it with creative touches. Don`t be dictated by trends and fashions unless you do wish to look like everyone else. Simple nods to a trend will show that you`re current, but it`s better to look as though you`ve invested in a well-crafted look that suits your body shape and personality. Try hats - it`s the season for them. Gorgeous french berets are wonderfully chic. Try mixing dresses with thick tights, slouch boots and heavy knit cardigans for a feminine, layered look. Don`t be afraid to add a little sparkle to your outfits - it`s the season to lift dark days with some glitz. And don`t automatically assume that grey Winter days mean grey Winter wardrobes - the season is perfect for festive berry red, deep navy blues and indigos, regal purples, sage greens and beautiful silvers, golds and winter whites.

Great brands and items to look for when creating a classic Autumn and Winter look include Barbour Jackets, Levi jeans, Mulberry for it`s leather goods, Hunters wellingtons, Burberry for its trench coats and Jones for boots. The high street also has a fantastic collection of quality items -try Zara, French Connection, Ted Baker, Reiss and department stores for quality, gorgeous fashion.
