Best Way to Remove Eye Makeup
If you're a seasoned makeup wearer, you know by now how important it is to work gently around the eyes, but you may be baffled about what is the best way to remove eye makeup.
Most women are aware that pulling and tugging the delicate skin surrounding the eye area can be a recipe for premature wrinkles. But still, faced with the threat of premature wrinkles, some women continue to remove eye makeup with soap, water, and a wash cloth because their eye makeup remover only causes them problems.
Problems from Oil Based Makeup Removers
Does this scenario sound familiar? You've decided to remove your eye makeup the right way, so you head to the store and pick up some eye makeup remover or cold cream. When you get your product home, you slather it on your eyelids and your eyes either start to sting and/or your vision becomes blurry. Then, to make matters worse, your eyeshadow is difficult to apply - it's blotchy. To add insult to injury, your eye makeup seems to disappear within a few short hours. If this sounds like you, don't feel alone, it happens everyday to the best of us. The most likely problem is that the eye makeup remover you purchased contains oil.

The problem with oil-based eye makeup removers is they tend to leave an oily residue on the skin, and unless the skin is rubbed clean, the residue remains - which takes you back to square one – tugging at the skin! If too much oily residue remains, it can leach down between the lashes and into the eyes. It doesn’t take much of an oil film to blur the vision and cause problems, especially if you wear contacts. If too much makeup remover reaches the eyeball, this can cause the eyes to sting and water.
Another problem with oil-based makeup removers is how they can interfere with your makeup. If you wear eye makeup, you may notice your eyeshadow is difficult to apply and turns out blotchy; your mascara ends up smudging onto your skin; or your eyeshadow fades away after only a few hours. These are all problems that can be caused by oil-based makeup removers.
Solution to Oil Based Makeup Removers
So what’s the solution? Oil-free eye makeup remover. Forget the cold-cream and the shortening (yes, shortening is grandma’s favorite eye makeup remover). There are many oil-free makeup removers on the market today. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good one, but don’t buy the cheapest one on the shelf either.
The best way I have found to gently remove eye makeup is with oil-free eye makeup remover and a few cotton balls. I use a clean cotton ball for each eye, and wipe away the excess with another clean cotton ball. I then splash my face with water, and apply oil-free moisturizer to my eyelids. When my moisturizer is completely dry, I’m ready to jazz up my eyes.
