How to Get a Close Shave with a Razor

Bare Legs

Have you ever thought about how to get a close shave with a razor?  Shaving is something us women have done for so long, that we never think there may be a better way to get a close shave with our razor, other than buying a new one.

When I was young, I begged my mother to let me shave.  To me, it meant that I was no longer a little girl.  After-all, I WAS 13 years old! When she finally gave me her nod of approval, she handed me a razor and a bar of soap; told me not to press to hard on my skin -  especially on my chins, knees, and ankles - and then left me alone to learn the rest. When I was done, I remember coming out of the bathroom with a few torn pieces of tissue covering my wounds.  Yes, I had nicked them all - the chins, ankles, and knees.

Know that I am older, I've learned more about shaving through experience, and through reading. One thing I have learned it that the men are one-up on us women when it comes to shaving -  men pass their shaving tricks down to their son's.  Mom's hand the razor to their daughters and let them go.

Here are seven great tricks from the men on how to get a close shave with a razor that us women can use too.

  1. Before shaving, it is helpful if the hair and skin have been wet for at least three minutes.
  2. Wash the area to be shaved with warm water, and with a gentle body wash to moisten the skin and hair. Washing raises the hair held down by dirt and natural body oils.
  3. Apply shaving gel in a circular motion to add a layer of protection to the skin. For best results, let the shaving gel rest on the skin one minute before shaving to further moisten the hair for a closer and more comfortable shave.
  4. Use a sharp razor with three or four blades when shaving; the more blades, the closer the cut; and there is less pulling and tugging of the hair.
  5. Lightly move the razor over the hair. The blade should do the work, not your wrist. Pressing down too hard with the razor scrapes and irritates the skin.
  6. Rinse shaved hair and gel from the razor often as you shave.
  7. After shaving, rinse the skin clean, pat dry, and then immediately apply a favorite hydrating moisturizer.
For a successful shave remember these four simple rules: Sharp razor, clean hair and skin, wet and protected skin, clean razor - the four secrets of how to shave close with a razor.
