HAIR

Four readily available ingredients for hair care are baking soda, honey, lemons, coffee, tomatoes, avocado, condensed milk, and olive oil.

You can use baking soda as a hair rinse to rid the hair of build-up from other styling products. It also leaves the hair super clean.

To make a luxuriant hair conditioner, mix together 2 ounces of Aloe Vera gel, 2 ounces of olive oil, and 6 drops each of rosemary and sandalwood essential oils.

Honey can be used to condition dry or damaged hair.

Lemons can be used to lighten or add highlights to already light-colored hair (just rinse in before going out in the sun).

Coffee is the ingredient of choice for those with darker hair. Pour one cup of cooled, strong espresso onto dry hair, working it in as completely as possible. Leave on for about twenty minutes, rinse and dry for shiny, glowing hair.

Mayonnaise is another item found in the refrigerator that can be used to help manage your hair. Mayonnaise can be rubbed into the hair as a conditioner. Use just enough to coat the hair, leave for 30 – 45 minutes, and then wash out. Your hair will be amazingly soft and shiny.

You can also rinse your hair with condensed milk in place of your normal conditioner. The protein in the condensed milk will leave your hair extra shiny too.

Unfortunately, certain things can affect the smell and tone of your tresses. (Think swimming pool chlorine.) To get rid of unpleasant odors in your hair, or that slightly greenish tinge that comes from well water or coloring, use tomatoes. You read that right! Whether sauce, paste, or juice, the acidity in tomatoes works wonders to balance PH levels in your hair, bringing back its natural smell and color.

BATH

Baking Soda will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and silky. Add several heaping tablespoons of baking soda as you fill the bathtub. Add a few drops of essential oil for a nice fragrance.

Milk baths have been used since Cleopatra's time because the natural ingredients soothe and nourish the skin. To make your own milk bath, combine:

  • ½ cup powdered milk,
  • ½ cup baking soda,
  • ½ cup Epsom salts,
  • ½ cup warmed honey,
  •  6 drops lavender (or other scent you enjoy).

Toss this mixture under your bathtub faucet while your tub fills with water. Soak in warm tub 20 minutes. Rinse skin with clean water (the shower works well) before leaving the tub. Pat, do not rub, the skin dry. Follow with your favorite lotion.

 ACHES AND PAINS

Ease aches and pains and relieve stress with Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). Women have used Epsom salt for years as an inexpensive way to relieve aches, pains, and stress in the bath.

FACE MASK
To make an avocado face mask that works for most skin types, mash up half of the pulp from a peeled avocado along with 1 teaspoon of salt. When you apply the mask, keep it away from your eyes, and let it stay on your face for about 20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. Avocados are good for nourishing and softening the skin.

FACE SCRUBS

Add a few drops of honey and a tablespoon of sugar together in the palm of your hand. Gently rub it on your face, keeping it away from the eyes. The sugar gently exfoliates and softens, and the honey softens and nourishes the skin.
