Spoiled Makeup
Is your makeup bag full of spoiled makeup? Makeup doesn't last forever; in fact, many cosmetic products have an expiration date on their label and many others do not.
Do you know how to tell if your makeup is spoiled? While these suggestions won't scientifically prove your makeup is spoiled, they can at least be used for clues.
Sniff Test
For all your makeup and skin care products, give them the "sniff" test. Do they smell different? If yes, then they could be contaminated and should be tossed.
Does your makeup or skin care product look different?
If the answer is yes to any of these questions, they could be spoiled and you should toss it.
Is your mascara older than 4 months?
If yes, toss it! It's time for a new tube. Shelf life for mascara is 2 to 4 months. After that, your tube is most likely loaded with bacteria in its wet and dark environment.
Has your mascara dried out and does it flake?
If yes, the bacteria killing preservatives have dried up too. Toss it! |

How Makeup and Skin Care Products Spoil
Preservatives
Most makeup and skin care products contain preservatives. Preservative are added to kill bacteria and extend the product's shelf life.
At times, preservatives added by the manufacturer are not adequate to kill bacteria. It could be that too little is used in the product, or the preservatives themselves are of poor quality. When the product is placed on store shelves, consumers have no way of knowing the quality or quantity of the preservatives. For this reason, it is important to buy products from reputable companies.
Mary Kay, Clinique , L'Oreal , Bobbi Brown , and Sephora are a few brand names that we've come to trust and expect quality products. Consistant extensive research and quality ingredients have been the backbone of their products. When it comes down to it, you get what you pay for.
Bacteria in makeup and skin care products
Simply opening a container exposes it to airborne bacteria. When the applicator (your hands, a wand, an applicator, etc.) touches your body, it picks up bacteria. When the applicator is put back into the product, in goes the bacteria too. Chemical preservatives kill most bacteria, but over time, preservatives break down and bacteria builds.
Product Recalls
Has there been recalls on makeup and skin care products that you use or are considering buying? Visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration if you are concerned about a product recall. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is responsible for U.S. safety regulations of the cosmetics and skin care industries.
Natural or Organic Makeup and Skin Care Products
you can expect the shelf life to be less than that of chemically preserved products. This is because the products themselves are free of chemical preservatives, or contain very little.
While natural products can be a nice alternative, extra care needs to be taken when it comes to bacteria and
contamination concerns.
