Essentials for Summer Skin Care and Makeup

Summer makeup bag
  • Sunscreen (wear all year)
  • Sunscreen designed for the lips (wear all year)
  • After-sun replenishing gel (aids in bringing moisture back to the skin after all day exposure to the sun)
  • Moisturizer (select according to your skin type)
  • Light-weight makeup foundation (mineral makeup works nicely all year, but especially during summer)
  • Eye primer: Helps eye makeup stay on longer, especially during hot and humid weather.
  • Brighter and/or more natural eyeshadow and eyeliner colors
  • Waterproof mascara for hot and humid days
  • Lip gloss (peach, apricot, coral, light pink)
  • Blush (coordinate with lip gloss or lipstick)
  • Sunglasses to protect the eyes from sun damage, and prevent squinting.
  • Wide brim summer hat to protect the skin from sun damage.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen...before or after the moisturizer? Apply sunscreen before your moisturizer; allow it to dry completely, and then apply your moisturizer.

Because the sun's rays work 365 days a year, it is important to have sunscreen working on your behalf year round.

Sunscreen is one of the best defenses against premature aging, including dark spots and wrinkling of the skin. Although it may go unnoticed for several years, skin can suffer damage in as little as 10 minutes.

Sunscreen is available in different formulas for the body, eyes, and lips. Each one is developed slightly different from the other.

Foundation
If you have a lovely complexion, skip the foundation in the summer and wear a tinted moisturizer instead.

Eye Primer
Wearing eye primer, especially in hot weather.  It will help extend the life of your eye makeup.

Eyeshadow
For mature skin, freshen up the eyes with natural or nude eyeshadow colors.

For women with younger skin, pick from the many beautiful pastel colors in green, blue, and purple for summer.

Eyeliner
If you normally wear black eyeliner, switch to more natural browns or try one of the many purples or greens to liven up the eyes.

Mascara
To combat the effects of summer's heat and humidity, wear waterproof mascara. It won't bleed like regular mascara in the heat. Use one coat instead of two or wear clear mascara for a crisp and clean summer look.

If wearing waterproof mascara, have eye makeup remover on hand.  Soap and water will not remove it completely, and you will lose eyelashes trying to forcefully remove it.

Sunscreen for Lips
Whether your wear lipstick, lip gloss, or go bare, remember to wear sunscreen on the lips.

Lip Gloss
Put away the lipstick for summer and wear a glistening lip gloss. Lip gloss is not just clear anymore; it is
available in many beautiful colors.  But if you feel more comfortable with lipstick...

Lipstick
For summer, choose bright colors.
  • Red will make your teeth look whiter.
  • Wear nude or tan lipstick for a more natural look.
  • Choose apricot, light pink, or peach for a fresher look.
Cheeks
The sun may naturally brighten the cheeks, but if you are stuck inside, wear coral or pink blush for the look of sun-kissed cheeks.
